Anglers Advantage

Hey everyone, sorry it’s been a while between posts but we have been busy of late, as the weather stays fine and the dry comes on the waters have been hotting up of late with the pelagic activity getting stronger with metre plus Queenfish being the norm and some signs of Longtail Tunas turning up in the harbour also.

 Going back to May 10th we were out for a half day session with Justin Mcgann and his Son John from PNG in the morning where the wind was whipping across the harbour and giving us a decent swell with some whitecaps which saw us heading into the closer feeder creeks and mangroves flicking soft Plastic lures along the edges and the junctions with Justin just narrowly missing a good sized Barramundi on the strike in on of the bays. John came up trumps with a good hit and run from a Queenfishwhich gave a good account of itself before falling to the boat for a happy snap. John then also bagged a Javelin fish at a creek mouth before landing another Queenfish for the morning with Justin working hard to no avail for the session.

 Sunday May 15th we had Peter Dickson and Russel Van Schellin from Melbourne out for a afternoon session where we targeted some Queenfish on the Light Tackle spinning gear with both of the boys getting into the Queenies but Russel came out on top with 5 Queenfish and Peter bagging 2 for the session.

On the Tuesday 17th we had Terrence Carrol from Concorde, Sydney along with Dean Leedham from Sans Souci out for the day with Terrence going for the full day session joined with Dean for the Morning. Early on withthe tides being suitable we targeted the feeder creeks flicking Soft Plastics around the mouths which saw Terrence sight casting to a fish which smashed the little Soft Plastic before running in to the mangrove stubs to eventually drop the hook for freedom. Terrence recouped his loss with 3 Javelin fish for the morning before bagging his first legal Barramundi on a Soft Plastic which jumped and screamed on the light gear before falling to the net for a happy snap and release. Dean bagged a Javelin fish and a bream for the morning before we dropped him back to the jetty to continue our session. With the tide now rising we went in search of the metre plus Queenfish which smash the high speed lures on the Light Tackle spin outfits getting airbourne and stripping line in screaming runs when they hit hard right on the surface. They turned up in force with some magnificent takes with Terrence getting 3 over a metre, the biggest coming in at 106cms!  Terrence did well bagging all 3 from the hook ups and staying tight on the fish as they tried to jump to freedom in spectacular fashion.

 On the 18th we had Kayla Stevenson and Russel Styles from Yarrawonga, VIC out with us for the afternoon session where we again targeted the bigger Queenfish with Kayla 1st to hook up with a whosh and a smash from a big Queenie but threw the hook before Kayla was in again a few casts later with the big Queeenie jumping and running for freedom before eventually tiring itself out falling boat side for some happy snaps. We had a few more spectacular strikes and near misses with Russel also hooking up on a big Queenie which smashed the leader for freedom and Kayla getting the line broke on a snag before we headed back to the ramp in a session that could have seen 4 fish with but at least one came boat side for the guys that worked hard for it.

 Friday we had from Sydney out with us for the full day where again we targeted the Queenfish though early on at this satge though to little avail as the tide was turning before we headed up the creeks for a Soft Plastic flick with working the edges hard for the day but the Barra weren’t buffing or wanting to play. We nabbed a couple of Javelin fish before heading back out on the tide change to target the Queenfish where we nabbed two over a metre before calling it a day.

 Saturday saw us out for a full day session with a good customer of mine Angelo Garcia from Wollongong, NSW where we did a repeat of the previous day targeting the feeder creeks early on where the fish were a bit ore cooperative this time around seeing us bag a nice Brown Mowong first up before Angelo got smoked by something that would not turn before busting us off in the mangroves. Angelo then had a good take from a 60cm plus Barra that jumped and carried on  and just had we thought we’d got the measure of him spat the hook boat side before sauntering off through murky water. Not to be outdone Angelo was on to another though smaller Barra 5 minutes later. Angelo then nabbed a Catfish and a Golden Snapper along with a Javelin fish for his session in the creek before we headed out to try our hand on the Queenfish again. 3rd cast and we were in with a double hook up on metre Queenfish with screaming runs and aerial displays before happy snaps and heading back to the jetty and home base for a cold one!

 Monday saw us out again for a full day session with Matt Bismark and his son Finn from Wellington, NZ where withthe tide swinging around we targeted the Queenfish early on in the day and with good drifts we had some awesome follows and hits withboth Father and Son doing well taking 6 fish between them all over a metre and 3 a piece to keep it even. After a hard session on the Queenfish we pushed up the creeks to also see the two boys do well with Matt bagging a Javelin fish and a Golden Snapper and Finn getting a Ramoray of all things on a Soft Plastic along with two other undesirables of a Toadfish and a Catfish as well as a nice Javelin fish for the session.

Hey guys just a quick blog to let you know that as the dry rolls in and with the spring tides the bigger queenfish are turning up with a scout from myself this afternoon bagging 4 over a metre with the biggest coming in at 110cm and weighing 6.5kgs. These fish are awesome fun on the light tackle spin outfits putting on aerial displays and steaming runs for freedom as they get air bourne with resulting head shakes and back flips. Hey everyone well the weather is turning it on in Darwin with 32 degrees everyday and calm waterways being the normal up here for the dry season. Been a bit quieter on the charter front in this last week with a minor electrical problem thrown in the mix knocking a few days of charters out the window. If you get anything electrical done on a boat make sure they don’t join cables no matter how good you think the joint might be saltwater will wear it down and corrode it eventually! Unbeknown to me this is what was done with the main positive cable from the motor to the isolation switch which was factory fitted! Anyway all is 100% now and back to business.

 On April 28th we had Paul Goodey from the Gold Coast along with John Bradbury out with us for the half day afternoon session where we targeted the mangrove banks early on on the rising tide where Paul brought along his saltwater fly rod and John flicked some high speed slugs for Queenfish but both to little avail as some wind chop was keeping the Queenies down. We then targeted ou rocky points where Paul hooked up on a Mackerel for a minute before spitting the hook boat side. Paul was getting down deep with the fast sinking fly line where he then boated a small Tuskfish followed shortly after by another and a ramoray before John landed a small Cod for his efforts before we called it a day and headed back to the ramp.

 After the dramas with the electrical work on the outboard I took the boat for a spin up one of the remoter creeks myself on the Friday 6th and on the low tide found a creek mouth with some bait fish activity and the buffing of Barra, out with the 4lb gear and the lightest jigheads I had and after a few flicks had the solid hit of a Barra followed by some aerial manoeuvres and a few solid tail thumping runs before the 51cm specimen fell boat side for the happy snaps then a swim and release. Targeting the shallows on the side of the mudflats resulted in similar hook ups and aerial borne antics of 2 more Barra to 53cms along with 4 Javelin fish and 2 Threadfin Salmon.

 Saturday 7th May I had Dave and Lorelee Ahern From Engadine in NSW out with me for the afternoon session where we pushed across the harbour to one of the feeder creeks flicking Soft Plastics along the mangrove lined banks with Dave 1st to hook up on a hard fighting Javelin Fish in the shallows. we then targeted one of the deeper creeks on the run in tide where Dave hooked up again this time on a Trevally followed shortly there after by Lorelee with a Javelin Fish  before Dave with precision casting flicked the little Soft Plastic lure into a shallow creek mouth to be rewarded with a bust up from a small Barra which he duly boated for a happy snap. Dave manged to get his species tally up to 5 with a Archer Fish and a nice Golden Snapper falling to the Soft Plastics with Lorelee adding to the species tally also getting a Estuary Cod in the late afternoon.

Hey  everyone, sorry it’s been a while with the blogs we’ve been slowly getting ourselves organised in Darwin and the top end. More paperwork and red tape to cut through but we’re up and going now and full steam ahead. We’ve been on the water 3 days this week so far and have 2 more charters booked so we will do a report for you at the end of the week.

 We’re getting the website revamped in the next few days and we’ll set up a Darwin segment which we will put our fishing reports and all our photos from our top end clientele. we are earl;y in the dry season at the moment and they’ve had a massive wet season up here with the suburb of Leanyer getting a record 3.2mtrs of rainfall throughout the wet season!  But thankfully things are drying up now and the sun is shining as we start our roll into the dry season with temperatures in the 30′s and as we do the pelagic species up here become more prolific with schools of marauding  Tunas and Mackerels turning up in the harbour. These speedsters make excellent targets for our light tackle spin outfits along with the resident Queenfish that we’re all ready targeting in the bays with the Queenfish delighting clients with their airborne antics and back-flips.

  In the last 3 charters we’ve caught in excess of 30 Queenfish along with the odd Mackerel but as I say stay tuned for a full report later in the week. Hey Everyone after much tossing around In the mind over the last couple of months with the state of the Queensland economy and the resulting devastation to the tourism economy we have decided to make the long haul north for the run off with the mighty Northern Territory Barramundi and the dry season. We have relocated to Darwin and will be fishing the surrounding systems as well as the plentiful species that Darwin Harbour has to offer. We will be targeting such species as Black Jew and Golden Snapper on Soft plastics as well as tunas on light Tackle Spin, A variety of Mackerel, Spanish Mackerel amongst them also abound in these waters. Stay posted for some updates to the website to reflect our Northern move and stay updated for some pictures of our catches as we get amongst them.

 Rest assured our move is not a permanent one and we will be back on the coast amongst our local species and thank you for your support during the last few years, we hope we might see some of you in the top end, all contact details are the same and if not we thank you once again for your loyalty and continued support and hope to see you back on the Sunshine coast in a few months time. Hey everyone, a busy week this last week with the weather turning it on and the fish cooperating for good measure with a few species being caught and some offshore action beginning to happen on the inner reefs at last with the Snapper finally making them selves known. ( See offshore fishing reports )

 Wednesday we had a trip up Noosa river for a change with Micheal and Margaret from Euroa in Victoria out with us for a morning session with Margaret getting off the mark early on with a small Flathead to start before kicking in to gear on the Jewfish in the middle reaches getting 3 nice school Jew along with a Bream, a Trevally and another Flathead for the session, Michel landed a hard fighting Trevally in the middle reaches for his effort.

Thursday afternoon we had Jim from Caloundra along with Les from Melbourne out with us on Maroochy River where Les was into the Flathead getting 6 for the arvo along with a pike but Jim caught the fish of the session, a beautiful hard fighting 55cm Maroochy River Jewfish.

Friday morning we had Chris and Tim from Ipswich with us on Maroochy river again with Tim racing ou in front on the strike early on and ending up with 3 species for his effort consisting of 1 Trevally, 2 Bream and 4 Flathead. Chris got a good strike going late in the session and landed the fish of the day being a 47cm Tailor which dove hard on several occasions before falling to the net, Chris caught 6 fish in total with the tally being 1 Tailor, 1 Bream and 4 Flathead.

Hey everyone the River systems have been firing in the last week and with the air temperature climbing a bit making for some pleasant days on the water.

On Wednesday we had James and Will from Wooga Wooga out with us on Maroochy River for a fuul day with what started out as a wet morning but cleared nicely before we got a downpour later on in the evening. Will stared off the mark and during the course of the day managed 3 Flathead, a Grunter Bream and 3 Silver Bream with James getting a 42cm Flathead along with 4 smaller Flathead, a Silver bream and coming home late in the evening on our Jew spot with 2 school Jewfish!

 Thursday we had Linton from Broadford and Paul from Seymour, Melbourne out with us for the afternoon session on the Pumicestone Passage which saw Linton off the mark early catching 3 Flathead before Paul stole  the session catching a magnificent 70cm Specimen  which made some ground searching runs before falling to the net but released unscathed. Paul also took 2 more smaller Flathead, a Silver Bream and a first for me a Blackfish on a soft Plastic putting on some aerial displays for good measure.

 Friday morning we had James and Elva from Bribie Island out with us for the morning session on maroochy river where James had a good session on the Bream catching 5 for the session with a nice 32cm specimen falling to the net while Elva was quite happy to sit back and enjoy the tranquil settings of the river.

 Hey everyone a lot of wet and windy weather in the last time since I wrote with scattered charters here and there as a result with a lot of fresh water in the systems shutting down the upper reaches and leading in decreased visibility in the lower reaches as a result leading to limited success on the water as a result also.

First up on Wednesday we had Ray and Sandy from Toowoomba way where we targeted the lower reaches of Maroochy River in windy showery conditions proving difficult to produce fish with a few missed strikes before Sandy nailed a hard hitting Trevally with Ray eventually getting a small Flathead as we pushed up the system to only find dirtier water before calling it a day.

 Thursday afternoon we had Geoff from Newcastle out with us on Maroochy River again as the wind had abated and with the push in tide in the afternoon the water clarity had improved which saw us take 5 Flathead as well as Geoff getting a hard fighting 47cm Jewfish along with a Silver Bream for the session.

  Friday morning we again had Geoff on board joined by Penny and Lyn from Melbourne which saw Lyn miss a nice fish straight up in the lower reaches before catching a Trevally and Bream for the morning which saw Geoff also catch another Jewfish along with 2 Grunter Bream and 2 Flathead for the morning.

 Saturday morning we had  Andrew from Brisbane, Joe from Caloundra and Tony from Burleigh where again in the morning session we had the run out tide with brown dirty freshwater leading to hard work finding fish which eventually saw Tony nab a nice 29cm Silver Bream and Andrew nab a Flathead in the middle reaches before we moved back down the system with results unfortunately not improving.

 Hey everyone another week gone in 2010 and with the schools back next week hopefully the water traffic will quieten off leaving us fishermen with the waterways to our self and settling the fish back down. A few good catches this week though with the Trevally and Jewfish making a show along with a hard fighting and jumping Tarpon(Ox Eye Herring) on the Maroochy River.

First up this week on Sunday we had Garbis and his Son Marcus from Melbourne out with us on Maroochy River  for the morning session with Marcus getting the upper hand on Dad with a nice 32cm Grunter Bream first to fall victim along with another Grunter Bream shortly after. Marcus also caught 2 small Flathead before catching a nice 55cm Flathead to round off the morning session.

 Monday morning we had Rocky and his partner Emily from Melbourne joined by my wife Julie on Maroochy river where Rocky managed 2 Flathead before nabbing a hard hitting Trevally with Emily getting the one Flathead for the session with Julie getting two small Estuary Cod and 2 Flathead for the morning.

 Tuesday we were on Maroochy river Again in the morning with Peter and his Son Nick from Brisbane joined by Steven from Sydney. Peter stole the show for the morning with a Moses Perch coming to the Plastics first followed by a nice hard fighting 40cm Golden Spot Trevally with Peter also getting another Moses Perch and a nice 28cm Bream. We have to give Nick an honourable mention for catching a massive green Toadfish! Steven unfortunately drew a blank for the session.

 In the Tuesday afternoon we had Phil and Wes from Melbourne out with us on Maroochy river with things being slow in the lower reaches and with the wind building we pushed up to the middle reaches and targeted the deeper holes to try for an elusive Jewfish with 3 coming to the boat and Phil coming up trumps with a 47cm specimen before catching a nice 5cm Jewfish in the late arvo.

 Wednesday we had and all day session on Maroochy river again with Rocky from Melbourne, Luke from Brisbane and Jim and Leonie from Alexandra Headland. We targeted the lower reaches first before the wind blew up with Rocky coming up with the goods with a beautiful hard fighting Tarpon (Ox Eye Herring) which jumped a few times before coming to the net. Leonie caught a hard hitting Grunter Bream along with 2 small Flathead as we pushed up the system where even the upper reaches were quite with Jim getting a Flathead and a Bream and Luke managing a Bream and two Flathead with Rocky adding to his bag with 5 Flathead and 2 Bream before coming up trumps again late in the day with a lovely 57cm Jewfish.

 Friday morning we had Dan from Tamworth joined by Josh from Samaki Fishing gear from Erina and Aaron from Melbourne  where we had the low tide early in the morning joined by the wind to make conditios difficult with Josh pulling in 5 Flathead on some Samaki Blade lures and a Samaki Zecton rod (stay tuned to the Tackle Guide for an update). Dan caught 2 small Flathead for the morning with Aaron getting a 41cm Flathead for his efforts.
